For decades, the Gaggia Classic has been one of the most recognisable home espresso machines in the world. Simple, robust and built around a professional 58 mm brewing platform, it has introduced countless coffee lovers to proper home espresso.
It has also become one of the most modified espresso machines around.
PID controllers, pressure changes, gauges and other upgrades became common among Classic owners looking for more control over their coffee.
Now, Gaggia has taken the Classic in a new direction.
Meet the Gaggia Classic UP — a new generation of the Classic featuring Dual PID temperature control, adjustable pre-infusion, 9-bar brewing pressure, an analogue brew-pressure gauge, a colour TFT display and built-in shot timer.
And perhaps the biggest difference?

What Is the Gaggia Classic UP?
The Classic UP isn’t simply a cosmetic refresh of the existing Classic.
Gaggia has retained much of what made the Classic appealing — its compact footprint, Italian manufacture, 58 mm brewing platform and hands-on espresso preparation — while adding considerably more control over the brewing process.
The result sits somewhere between the simplicity of the traditional Classic and the level of control normally associated with more advanced home-barista machines.
For someone entering specialty coffee, that makes the Classic UP particularly interesting: there’s plenty to learn, but you shouldn’t need to replace the machine as soon as you want to start experimenting.
Dual PID Temperature Control
One of the headline additions is Dual PID temperature control.
A PID electronically manages temperature much more precisely than a conventional thermostat system. On the Classic UP, temperature management is provided for both the coffee brewing and steam operating modes.
Importantly, Dual PID does not mean dual boiler. The Classic UP remains a single-boiler espresso machine.
What it gives you is much greater control over how that boiler behaves during the two different jobs it needs to perform.
For espresso, the brewing temperature can be adjusted to suit the coffee you’re using.
That’s useful because there isn’t one perfect temperature for every coffee. A traditional darker espresso roast may respond very differently from a lighter specialty roast.
Instead of accepting one factory brewing temperature, the Classic UP gives you another important variable to work with.
Adjustable Pre-Infusion
Before an espresso reaches full brewing pressure, pre-infusion gently introduces water to the coffee puck.
The Classic UP allows you to choose between three pre-infusion levels — MIN, MED and MAX — or switch pre-infusion off completely.
Why does that matter?
Because changing the way an extraction begins can influence how evenly the puck becomes saturated and how the coffee ultimately extracts.
Combined with grind size, dose, yield and temperature, pre-infusion gives the home barista another tool for dialling in different coffees.
And unlike modifying an older Classic to gain additional extraction control, it’s built into the machine.
Factory 9-Bar Brewing
The Classic UP uses a pump with a higher nominal capability, but brewing pressure is regulated by a factory 9-bar OPV.
Nine bar has long been the traditional reference point for espresso extraction.
More importantly, the Classic UP adds something that makes that pressure meaningful to the person standing in front of the machine:
An Analogue Brew-Pressure Gauge
The new analogue gauge allows you to watch brewing pressure during extraction.
It’s both a visual upgrade and a genuinely useful diagnostic tool.
As you learn espresso, you can begin connecting what you’re seeing on the gauge with what’s happening in the cup.
Together with the machine’s temperature information and shot timer, you now have three useful pieces of feedback:
Temperature. Pressure. Time.
That’s a considerable step forward from the traditional Classic experience.
A Colour TFT Display and Built-In Shot Timer
The Classic may still look mechanical from across the kitchen, but the UP introduces a colour TFT display.
The display provides access to machine settings while also giving you useful information during brewing.
One of the most welcome additions is an integrated shot timer.
Anyone who has spent time dialling in espresso knows how quickly the countertop starts filling up with scales, timers, dosing tools and other accessories.
Having extraction time displayed directly on the machine simplifies the process.
The interface also allows you to adjust functions such as brew temperature, pre-infusion and timed extraction settings.
Still a Proper 58 mm Espresso Machine
Gaggia hasn’t abandoned one of the Classic’s biggest strengths.
The Classic UP retains a professional-size 58 mm brewing platform and comes equipped with a stainless-steel portafilter.
That matters beyond the specification sheet.
The 58 mm format opens up an enormous ecosystem of espresso accessories — precision baskets, tampers, distribution tools and other equipment — allowing you to develop your setup over time.
Inside, the Classic UP uses a lead-free brass boiler and brass group, providing the thermal foundation for the machine’s PID-controlled brewing system.
Professional Steam Wand
Espresso is only half the equation for cappuccino and flat-white drinkers.
The Classic UP features a fully articulated professional stainless-steel steam wand, allowing greater freedom when positioning your milk pitcher.
Combined with dedicated PID management for steam operation, it gives the machine the versatility needed to move between straight espresso and milk-based drinks.
So, Who Is the Classic UP For?
This is where we think Gaggia has made the machine particularly interesting.
The original Classic has traditionally appealed to people who wanted a relatively simple, hands-on espresso machine — often knowing that modifications might come later.
The Classic UP changes that equation.
If you’re buying your first serious espresso machine, there’s enough technology here to help you explore specialty coffee for years.
If you’re already familiar with espresso, there’s significantly more control available straight out of the box.
And if you were considering buying a Classic and immediately adding a PID, changing the pressure setup or adding other modifications, the UP deserves a serious look before going down that route.
Gaggia Classic UP vs Gaggia Classic E24
The Classic E24 remains a very capable traditional espresso machine.
The difference is really about what you want from the experience.
The E24 keeps things deliberately mechanical and straightforward. The Classic UP moves toward the enthusiast who wants more information and more control without abandoning the hands-on nature of making espresso.
With the UP, you gain features such as Dual PID temperature management, adjustable brewing temperature, adjustable pre-infusion, a pressure gauge, TFT interface and integrated shot timer.
If you simply want to grind, dose, tamp and brew, the E24 still makes plenty of sense.
If you want to start manipulating variables and understanding why one extraction behaves differently from another, the Classic UP gives you considerably more to work with.
The Classic Has Grown Up
Perhaps the best thing about the Classic UP is that Gaggia hasn’t tried to turn it into an automatic coffee machine.
You still grind your coffee.
You still dose and tamp.
You still lock in the portafilter.
You still texture your own milk.
And ultimately, you’re still responsible for the espresso that ends up in the cup.
What has changed is the amount of information and control available to you while doing it.
For years, the Gaggia Classic community has shown just how much potential exists inside this little Italian espresso machine.
With the Classic UP, Gaggia has brought many of those ideas into the machine itself.
Dual PID. Adjustable pre-infusion. 9-bar brewing. Pressure monitoring. Shot timing.
The Classic. Now Upgraded.
